DOP Aprutino Pescarese: what it really means

The DOP is not a promotional adjective: it links the oil to a territory and a specification. To recognize it you need to look at the certification and label, not just the olive variety.

The DOP is not a promotional adjective: it links the oil to a territory and a specification. To recognize it you need to look at the certification and label, not just the olive variety.

A denomination linked to the province of Pescara

The DOP Aprutino Pescarese identifies an oil produced according to rules defined in the area foreseen by the specification. Elice, home to Cascina Bruno, belongs to this olive-growing territory.

Origin of the olives, transformation, characteristics and controls contribute to the denomination. The simple writing "Abruzzo oil" is not equivalent to DOP.

The cultivars envisaged

The specification indicates Dritta, Leccino and Toccolana, alone or together, for at least 80%; other varieties can contribute up to 20%. This explains why a DOP can be a blend and why not every single variety produced in the area is automatically DOP.

A Majia 100% Coratina tells the story of the cultivar; a DOP tells of adherence to a certified territorial system. They are different and both useful information.

How to recognize it

Check the full name “Aprutino Pescarese”, the reference to the protected name, the packager and the traceability elements. If you buy online, the card should clearly show the same identity as the product.

Avoid inferring the certification from colours, maps of Abruzzo or words like "traditional": the DOP must be explicitly declared.

How to taste it

The denomination does not impose an identical taste on each product. manufacturer. Vintage, varietal composition and agronomic choices leave room for nuances, in compliance with the established parameters.

Taste it alone and then with bread, legumes or vegetables. The transition from the glass to the plate shows if intensity and persistence meet your taste.
